This week students in 5C have been inquiring into the topic of persuasive writing. They began by thinking of a common type of persuasion in their daily lives - commercials. Students journaled about the purpose of commercials, the form they take, their characteristics and gave some great examples. They also looked up examples of slogans and catch phrases used by popular brands. Here are some examples of their work.

After reading a variety of persuasive texts this week in our language arts centers, students made notes independently about the characteristics that made these texts persuasive. Later, as a class we shared our observations which you can see recorded here on the left.

- Use our observations to write a short persuasive paragraph
- Use our class example to write our own persuasive paragraph later at home.
Reflection & Evaluation

The following day we practiced reflecting on and evaluating our work by using the strategy Two Stars and a Wish. We evaluated our writing in two categories - grammar and structure.
Students then worked in pairs to use the same strategey to evaluate their classmate's writing. Here are some examples of the pieces they were evaluating.

Students in 5C have been exploring how to improve their writing by using a broader vocabulary. This week they have been practicing applying new synonyms to their persuasive texts and today they will begin adding making their writing more specific through the use of adverbs.
