Writing to Report
During this unit of study, students are experiencing the need to report on their discoveries and the need to find relevant information within other report texts.
We began our study of reports by reading a variety of reports and evaluating the common components. Students compared the qualities of two different texts to help them better distinguish between reports and narratives. Here are some of the differences students noted.

Reports Do...
- Have a title - Have an introduction - Talk about one topic - Tell you how something is - Give specific details - Have complete conclusions |
Reports Do Not...
- Tell about a person's life (unless it is a report on a person) - Have few details - Tell you a story |
Today they began planning their own writing after observing a teacher-created model.

The Writing Process: Planning
5C is beginning the writing process for their first text type this year - reports. We are studying different ecosystems together with our Unit of Inquiry. Students chose to investigate ecosystems such as: rainforests, deserts, coral reefs and grasslands. Students observed their teacher model the process for gathering information from another source using a gathering grid.
